About Patrik RINGBORG
Patrik Ringborg is one of Sweden’s most prolific conductors, having conducted over 90 operas and a vast concert repertoire. From 1993, he worked with the opera companies of Freiburg and Essen before returning to Freiburg as Chief Conductor in 2006. Subsequently, he was appointed General Music Director at the State Theatre in Kassel in 2007, a position he held for a decade. There he conducted 27 new opera productions, including Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Parsifal, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Strauss’s Salome, Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier, and Die Frau ohne Schatten, Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, and Die Zauberflöte, Puccini’s Manon Lescaut and Turandot, and many more modern works like Dialogues des Carmélites, Lady Macbeth from Mtsensk, Reimann’s Lear, and Henze’s Orpheus.
He has worked with the Staatsoper Dresden, the Volksoper in Vienna, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar, and the Norwegian National Opera. At the Cologne Opera, he conducted Der Rosenkavalier, including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s farewell performances. During the Summer of 2025, he made his debut at the Bregenzer Festspiele conducting the Wiener Symphoniker in Der Freischütz .
Patrik Ringborg has conducted over 30 German orchestras, including the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestra of Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, and the Gürzenich Orchestra, as well as orchestras in many other countries.
In Sweden, he has worked with all the larger orchestras.
Maestro Ringborg has appeared regularly with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 1996 and conducted the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in 2008, as well as the Birgit Nilsson Prize Award Ceremony (honouring Yo-Yo Ma) in 2022.
After conducting Elektra with the Royal Swedish Opera in Savonlinna (2010), his Stockholm opera debut followed in 2013 with a new production of Parsifal, directed by Christof Loy. He returned in 2016 to conduct the world première of Medea by Daniel Börtz.
The Gothenburg Opera appointed him Principal Guest Conductor following his debut in 1998 with Tannhäuser. He subsequently conducted all Wagner productions there until 2006 and later returned for new productions of Salome, Notorious (World Première), Ariadne auf Naxos, and Herr Arnes penningar.
He has been a guest at Malmö Opera since 1992 and has held the position of Principal Guest Conductor since 2022. Following Salome, his 9th opera production there will be Lohengrin this Autumn.
Patrik Ringborg was awarded the Opera Prize of the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet in 2014 for the productions of Parsifal and Das Rheingold, and ranked number one on the 2015 list of the magazine Opus, nominating the 20 most important people in Swedish classical music. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In 2022, King Carl XVI Gustaf conferred him with the gold medal Litteris et Artibus, and in 2023, he received the Hugo Alfvén Gold Medal.

WEBER:
DER
FREISCHÜTZ
17.07.2025
Patrik Ringborg is new on the podium
Musically, this Freischütz represents a leap forward compared to last year’s premiere. Conductor Patrik Ringborg and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra cultivate an elastic soundscape from which details emerge quite naturally. Everything sounds like it is being heard in a new way. Given the acoustic situation where the orchestra’s performance is broadcast from the Festspielhaus to the outside via a sound system, it’s astonishing how Ringborg tweaks the dynamics and tempo.
Münchner Merkur, 18.07.2025
In Carl Maria von Weber’s Freischütz, the magnificent Vienna Symphony Orchestra offers a match for Philipp Stölzl’s devilishly spectacular production on the lake.
Is there a danger that the music is being pushed into the background by the Las Vegas-like show effects? Yes. But that doesn’t happen in the current Bregenz Freischütz, thanks primarily to the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Patrik Ringborg. The top Viennese orchestra plays with impressive precision, soulfulness, and dedication, and Michael Vogt’s short cello solos are dreamlike. And the Swedish conductor delves even deeper in his interpretation than Enrique Mazzola did last year, unearthing moods in the early Romantic work that are magically captivating in their diversity and intensity.
Der Standard, 18.07.2025
Musically, this Freischütz scores compared to last year in yet another respect: Patrik Ringborg’s debut in Bregenz and at the helm of the once again brilliant Wiener Symphoniker is remarkable. The former Freiburg Principal Conductor and later interim Music Director is an expert in grand Romantic musical arcs and shines with his incredibly exciting conducting.
Badische Zeitung, 18.07.2025
After all, Patrik Ringborg is a careful, conscientious, and energetic champion of Weber and his intense, sensual and intelligent music. On the occasion of their 125th anniversary (they have performed annually in Bregenz since 1960), the Vienna Symphony Orchestra plays flawlessly, with a beautiful sound, a brisk and dramatic tempo, and powerful drive.
Opernfreund, 20.07.2025
Such scenic opulence finds its equal in the orchestra pit, where Patrik Ringborg, a true sorcerer of sound, breathes life into the spellbinding score with the Wiener Symphoniker animated by the spirits, landscapes, and emotions of the libretto. Not for a single moment did the evening falter musically: it was pure delight throughout, where a masterfully crafted orchestral coherence brought out the exuberant richness of the composition with remarkable brilliance. Let’s also applaud the beauty and power of the Prager Philharmonischer Chor, conducted by Lukáš Kozubík. A true force of nature!
Opera Diary, 20.07.25
But it should also be noted that conductor Patrik Ringborg truly succeeded in infusing the ensemble with an irresistible drive, thanks to an energetic beat, sustained tempi and clear nuances. Overall, it was a pleasure to experience this refreshed and improved show, guaranteeing an excellent evening.

Music as a Force of Nature
Under the sensitive direction of Patrik Ringborg, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra elicits a colourful expressiveness from Weber’s score, which oscillates between dramatic power and chamber music precision. The integration of noise and sound levels into the orchestral structure is particularly noteworthy. The sounds of nature, such as the boar’s roar, the rumbling of the wolf’s gorge or the whispering of the forest, are not created as external effects, but grow organically out of the music itself – an acoustic fabric of beguiling plasticity.
The two choirs carry a significant part in the musical quality. The Festival Choir, directed by Benjamin Lack, and the Prague Philharmonic Choir, under the direction of Lukáš Kozubík, act with vocal clarity and dramatic presence. Their precise interplay lends the performance impressive power and strong resonance.
Vorarlberger Nachrichten, 18.07.25
As so often, the Bregenz Festival has engaged outstanding singers, masterfully supported by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, conducted for the first time by the Swede Patrik Ringborg. Anyone who enjoys dramatic and poetic musical theatre will unquestionably get their money’s worth.
Augsburger Allgemeine, 18.07.2025
In the second Freischütz Summer, the acting no longer seems so dominant; the balance is just right, and the music always carries the performance. And the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Patrik Ringborg, amplified to a monumental sound, plays excellently.
Alb Bote Münsingen, 19.07.25
The Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Philharmonic Choir were led by the fantastic, young and charismatic conductor Patrik Ringborg.
Angora, 10.08.2025
In his Bregenz debut, Patrik Ringborg leads the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Prague Philharmonic Choir to new depths. Critics hailed his interpretation as a leap forward in musical coherence and Romantic expression. Ringborg’s dynamic pacing reveals the emotional arc of Der Freischütz, balancing chamber-like delicacy with heroic, orchestral sweep. His integration of sound effects – the wolf’s growl, thunder rumble, mist whispers – emerges organically from the music rather than being forced add-ons. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra gives a richly expressive yet nimble sound throughout. Ringborg and the orchestra preserve Weber’s leitmotifs, lyricism and eerie moments with flair and clarity – delivering music that honours Romantic tradition.

Nystroem:
Herr Arnes Penningar
19.02.2022
What a different, authentic, and original work Herr Arnes penningar by Gösta Nystroem is — especially when conducted as powerfully, energetically, and transparently as by Patrik Ringborg, who motivates the fabulous orchestra and the at least equally fabulous chorus of the Gothenburg Opera to fantastic musical achievement. Ringborg benefits from the fact that Herr Arnes penningar, Nystroem’s only contribution to the genre, was originally conceived for radio broadcast, with the music thus clearly placed at the forefront (which also here leads to some strong oratorical moments).

WAGNER:
DIE WALKüre
Gothenburg Opera, 2004
In the production of Wagner’s Die Walküre at the Gothenburg Opera, the music is reborn. Above anyone else, the conductor Patrik Ringborg should be highlighted. He brings an extraordinary wealth of nuance to the orchestral playing.
All focus is on the music, on the continuously changing emotions that give unexpected entrances to the drama. Or rather: to the chamber play, hiding behind all the sumptuousness and mythological complexity. A quite different Wagner resounds, closer to Strindberg and Ibsen than you would initially expect. A portrayer for concerns and fissures of the bourgeois family, telling the story of the complex relationship between the individual and society: To belong or not to belong, build up or destroy?
The placement of the orchestra on stage instead of in the pit is also a fortunate choice. Now, the communication between the singers and the instrumental writing comes into focus, and the construction of the leitmotifs becomes understandable in a different way.
If someone should be designated hero of the evening, it is conductor Patrik Ringborg. Like in last season’s production of Tristan und Isolde, he succeeds in bringing out an extraordinary agility and richness of nuance, and we can already notice that Ringborg is on his way to creating his own identity as conductor through this surprisingly fresh approach to Wagner. Most impressive is maybe the chamber music touch, the lightness and flexibility, as in the solo passages for cello, bass clarinet, bassoon and oboe. So beneficially far from the heavy and bombastic Wagnerian playing. So unreservedly beautiful.
The simplicity and transparency are what most distinguish this performance, a transparency that is absolutely to Wagner’s advantage. The music is reborn and lives its own life, beyond knightly armour and over-ideological interpretations.

STRAUSS: SALOME
Gothenburg Opera, 2011
The singers might drown in theatrical effects; however, never in the orchestral sound. The fantastic conductor Patrik Ringborg succeeds in making the huge orchestra sound unbelievably slender.

STRAUSS: ELEKTRA
Theater Freiburg, 2007
This suits the conducting style of chief conductor Patrik Ringborg well. He leads the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra from one climax to the next, yet controls fervor and ecstasy like a psychoanalyst on the podium. Strauss would have been delighted by such sensitivity toward his "already so loudly composed" work. An evening full of pleasant surprises …

Stenhammar: Sången
17.11.2023

Stenhammar: Symphony No. 2
22.09.2021
